2010 One Goal Summer Conference: Building the Future Together “Putting Families and Children First”

9th Annual Autism Summer Institute Literacy Training

The Summer Literacy Institute. presented by Glennda McCallister, Linda Johnston, and Nina Gregory, will focus on utilizing the Four-Blocks Literacy Model for students with significant cognitive disabilities. Participants will be able to describe and implement the major components of the Four-Blocks with students who have significant cognitive and/or physical disabilities at the supported and participatory levels. As part of the training, participants will be expected to create materials to support implementation. Each participant will receive a copy of both The Teacher’s Guide to the Four-Blocks and Children with Disabilities: Reading and Writing the Four-Blocks Way. Target audience: Teachers of supported and participatory and speech/language pathologists. Lighting the Way to Guardianship & Other Decision-Making Options

Office of the Public Guardian is hosting three two-day face to face workshops (day 1 for attorneys and other professionals and day 2 for individuals and families) in Pensacola, Miami, and Orlando. The Sponsored by the FDDC, it aims to increase the knowledge of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families about guardianship options in Florida, and to increase the knowledge of legal professionals about Florida’s disability communities and Florida Statutes pertaining to guardianship and guardianship alternatives.

Florida Educator Accomplished Practices Need Your Input

The Florida Department of Education is seeking input from teachers, parents, and education professionals from across the state to revise the Florida Educator Accomplished Practices which form the core basis for all Florida teacher preparation programs.  The revisions will further refine the state’s standards for effective instructional practice and will establish the core practices for teacher appraisal systems under the state’s Race to the Top plan.  Visit www.fldoe.org/profdev/FEAPSRevisions/ to view the draft and submit your feedback by June 15, 2010.

Summer Academy for Teachers of Health Education

Registration for the Department of Education’s Summer Academy for Teachers of Health Education (Academy) is now open through June 2, 2010, or until capacity is reached, whichever comes first.  Prior to registering for sessions, please carefully read the Academy booklet at http://www.fldoe.org/BII/CSHP/pdf/SummerAcademyRegistrationBooklet.pdf.  The registration link is included inside of the booklet and is an active or “hot” link.  We are looking forward to a full house, so register as soon as possible.  We are excited about the variety and richness of sessions.  Teachers and health educators will receive great instructional and teaching strategies and activities that can be adapted for use with their students

CHADD Meeting

Please join us for the June meeting of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD).  The event is titled “AD/HD – A Parent’s Perspective”, an interactive forum led by psychologists for families and adults with AD/HD.   Our presenter will be Linda Reynolds, L.M.H.C., School Counselor for the Sanibel School for the School District of Lee County.  One (1) CEU for Lee County Teacher Inservice Credits are available.

Communicating and Communication Skills

This course from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities is designed to assist the participant in communicating with the individuals you support, specifically those individuals that use alternative means to communicate and express themselves.  Touch cues, visual aids and guides are some of the topics and suggested tools offered in this training. Facilitators include Robert Steinhauer and Todd Ryan from APD.

APD Personal Outcomes One-Day Overview

This one-day overview training session from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities is intended to provide participants with an overall understanding of the Personal Outcomes concepts to enhance their abilities to integrate, apply, and support outcomes for persons with developmental disabilities.  Robert Steinhauer from APD will be facilitating this training.

Personal Outcome Overview Training is mandatory for all developmental service providers other than support coordinators.  Support Coordinators are required to attend the

5-day Personal Outcomes training.  Individuals, family members, and other interested parties are also welcome to attend. Registration is required as this training is limited to 25 participants. Person Centered Planning

During 2008, the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) received a Real Choice Systems Change Grant from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), titled “Person Centered Planning and Implementation.”  The grant was awarded to APD to refocus service planning and implementation processes using person centered approaches to ensure people we serve and their families are directing the choice and control over the services and supports each person receives.  This training is designed to enhance the APD system’s ability to ask people about their life expectations, listen and understand the person’s desired outcomes and then construct and put supports and services into practice that honor those personal choices.  This training will be facilitated by Robert Steinhauer, APD, and Ashley Mitchell, BRAVO Support Services.

The training is mandatory for all waiver and general funded support coordinators.  It will count toward annual in-service requirements and is required for recertification of support coordinators for the Developmental Disabilities Home and Community Based Services Waiver.  This will also be a required component of pre-service training for all prospective waiver support coordinators.  Each support coordinator is required to participate in a two-day session.
