President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities: Coming Up Taller Awards
The Coming Up Taller Awards reward outstanding after-school and out-of-school arts and humanities programs for underserved children and youth. Maximum award: $10,000. Eligibility: programs initiated by museums, libraries, performing arts organizations, universities, colleges, arts centers, community service organizations, schools, businesses, and eligible government entities. Welch’s/Scholastic: Harvest Grants
The Harvest Grants funding program helps schools across the United States create fruit and vegetable gardens. Maximum award: packages valued at $1,000 each. Eligibility: K-8 teachers. Horace Mann Educators Scholarship Program for Educators
The Horace Mann Educators Scholarship Program for Educators offers scholarships for public and private precollegiate and educators to take college courses. Applicants must be a K-12 educator currently employed by a U.S. public or private school and planning to enter a two or four-year accredited college or university. The college must be a public or private, not-for-profit institute. Applicants must have at least two or more years of teaching experience. The program is not open to residents of Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey and New York. The sponsor will award one recipient $5,000 in scholarship funds payable over four years, and fifteen other recipients will receive $1,000 each in scholarship funds payable over two years. Twenty additional recipients will each receive one-time $500 awards. Deadline: March 1st, 2010. Annual Pre-conference Day for Educators and the 17th Annual Autism Conference
We are happy to announce that UCF CARD is hosting a Preconference Day for Educators and the 17th Annual Autism Conference. This year’s pre-conference and conference will feature outstanding presentations by experts in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) research and educational practices, family members, and individuals with ASD. The Keynote presentation, “Helping to Make Sure that ‘All Means All’: Students with ASD and School-Wide Positive Behavior Support,” will be presented by Dr. Ilene S. Schwartz, Professor of Special Education at the University of Washington. The purpose of the annual conference is to provide information on state-of the- art practices in areas that promote best practices in education, early intervention, and quality community based life-styles for individuals with autism, deaf-blindness, and related disabilities. SchoolsMovingUp Free Webinar
WestEd’s SchoolsMovingUp website will feature another free webinar, “Educating Overage and Undercredited Youth: Continuation High Schools.” This webinar, part of a series of WestEd-sponsored webinars related to the educational goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), will summarize findings from a year-long descriptive study of California’s continuation high schools, which offer an alternative for students at risk of not completing their education and which are a cornerstone of the state’s dropout prevention strategy. The webinar will highlight the qualities and practices of continuation high schools with positive student outcomes.

Positive Behavioral Support for Families

Each family has its own menu of behavioral problems that it is dealing with and occasionally we all need advice and support. Well help is here for you! Positive Behavioral Support for Families is a 3-week 9-hour course in which new ideas will be discussed and you will learn skills you can start putting to work immediately. This class is for you if you are having difficulty with a child that is talking back, refusing to eat with the family, throwing fits, not wanting to go to bed on time, lying, running away, or not following directions.

Math Training Opportunity for Teachers
RtI Teaching Learning Connections (RtI TLC) is pleased to announce the first three mathematics professional developments for 2010. Algebra Success Keys (ASK) and the Keys of Problem Solving (KoPS) are two math initiatives provided for teachers of mathematics in grades PreK-12. They are both focused on research-based strategies and resources that address algebraic thinking (ASK) and problem solving (KoPS) to support all students who struggle in learning higher order mathematics content and skills. The following dates and locations have been set as follows:
