NAMI Basics Education Course

Come attend a series of SIX (6) weekly classes structured to help parents/caregivers understand mental illness and advocate for their child (Pre-K to 12th grade), while maintaining their own well being.  The course is developed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and will be taught by trained parent facilitators who understand what it is like to raise a child with a mental illness.  There is no cost to participate in the NAMI Basics Education Program. This program offers guidance and resources to help parents to work with professionals on their child’s behalf. 

Course begins Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 6pm

Haitian-Creole Classes

Edison College will be offering weekly Haitian-Creole classes through their continuing education program. Feel free to spread the word to counseling agencies and medical facilities providing services to Haitians in our community.  With a growing Creole speaking population in Southwest Florida, such courses can benefit professionals in fields such as education, religion, social work, hospitality, construction, medical, legal, and court interpreting services. In addition to class work, all coursework will make use of cultural activities to enhance the study of the language and students’ appreciation of cultural diversity.

NAMI Family-to-Family Education Course

Come attend a series of twelve (12) weekly classes structured to help family members/caregivers understand and provide support to their ill relative, while maintaining their own well being.  The course is taught by trained volunteers who understand what it is like to have a loved one with a serious mental illness. There is NO COST to participate in the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program. Over 150,000 family members in the US and Canada have completed this course.  We think you will be pleased by how much assistance the program offers.

Roadmap to Pre-K RTI Webinar Materials Now Available

The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) is pleased to offer the accompanying materials from the May 20th webinar, “Roadmap to Pre-K RTI: Applying Response to Intervention in Preschool Settings.”  In this webinar, Drs. American Legion: Grants for Child Welfare

American Legion Child Welfare Foundation Grants to Help Children fund proposals that contribute to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual welfare of children through innovative organizations and/or their programs designed to benefit youth. Grants for Organizations that Serve Disadvantaged Communities

The Public Welfare Foundation supports organizations that address human needs in disadvantaged communities, with strong emphasis on organizations that include service, advocacy, and empowerment in their approach. The Foundation provides both general support and project-specific grants. Maximum award: $50,000. Eligibility: Public and private entities, including nonprofit organizations and for-profit organizations. The foundation is currently focusing on three program areas: criminal and juvenile justice, health reform, and workers’ rights. SOS: Great American Bake Sale

The Great American Bake Sale from Share Our Strength (SOS) seeks to ensure that low-income children receive nutritious food during critical times when they are out of school and particularly vulnerable to hunger by increasing participation among low-income children in summer and after-school meal programs. Share Our Strength is specifically interested in increasing participation in meal programs that use USDA reimbursement through the Summer Food Service Program, National School Lunch Program, or Child and Adult Care Food Program. Maximum award: $10,000. Eligibility: 501(c)(3) organizations, schools with a valid NCES code, or local government entities that work to ensure children have access to after-school and summer meal programs. Free In2Books Curriculum from ePals, Inc.

In2Books, the curriculum-based e-mentoring program from ePals, Inc., will be offered for free to some Title I schools. Students participating in In2Books select and read age-appropriate, high-quality books from a list compiled by a team of children’s literature experts. The students are matched with carefully screened adult pen pals who read the same books as the students. After reading each book, students and their pen pals exchange thoughts about the important issues in the book via online letters. Teachers reinforce these activities in the classroom with related lessons and discussion. Maximum award: the online program, books and professional development (valued at more than $500). Florida Council for Exceptional Children (FCEC) Award Nominations for 2009 and Leadership Institute

UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation Grants

The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation has announced that new grants are available to help children who need critical health care treatment, services, or equipment not covered or not fully covered by their parents’ health benefit plans. UHCCF provides grants to families to help pay for child health care services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy sessions, prescriptions, and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, orthotics, and eyeglasses.
