Talking to Parents About Autism Action Kit

If you suspect a developmental delay or autism, speak up!  As an early childhood educator, you are face-to-face with young children every day. You observe them, teach them, love them and interact with them. That means you’re in the ideal position to notice if their development seems delayed. When this happens — you need to talk to the parents and urge them to have their child screened. Let them know that early intervention can make a huge difference in a child’s life. There is no doubt that this can be a difficult conversation to have with a parent. Autism Speaks and the Advertising Council have created a Talking to Parents About Autism Action Kit that provides tools and conversation-starters to help you speak up when you suspect autism. For more information about this kit or to download it please visit http://www.autismspeaks.org/whatisit/talking_to_parents_action_kit.php.

Federal Grant Aims at Reducing Preschool Expulsion Rates in Delaware

According to the Yale Child Study Center, Delaware has the fourth highest rate for preschool expulsions — 13 children for every 1,000 enrolled in daycare, reports the Delaware News Journal. That could change, however, as a result of a $9 million grant from the Center for Mental Health Services in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The money will be used to teach parents how to bond with their emotionally disturbed children through parent-child interaction therapy, which is said to improve relationships, increase children’s pro-social behavior, and improve parenting skills. About 60 families annually will receive in-home treatment and about 85 families will be served as outpatients at a therapist’s office. The effort will focus on troubled children, typically 2 to 5 years old, who often act out in aggressive ways, such as by hitting other children, pulling their hair, or throwing things across the room, says Susan Cycyk, director of Delaware’s Division of Child Mental Health Services. Announcing Bright Beginnings

Announcing Bright Beginnings Because a strong foundation in early reading and mathematics is essential to each child’s future success, Florida’s standards, instruction, and assessments in Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) through third grade must be structured so that learning builds progressively from grade to grade. An initiative known as Bright Beginnings has been developed to provide stakeholders with child expectations standards, resources, and tools for instruction; tools and training for assessment; and information/resources for parents. To access these resources and learn more about the Bright Beginnings initiative, please visit http://brightbeginningsfl.org/.
