American School Board Journal Magna Awards
The American School Board Journal is accepting nominations for its 2009 Magna Awards, which recognize programs that have been important in promoting the district’s mission and advancing student learning; capable of being replicated by other school boards with similar conditions and resources; and the result of collaboration between the school board and others. Mathematics Education Trust
Established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematics Education Trust (MET) offers opportunities to expand your professional horizons! MET supports the improvement of mathematics teaching and learning at the classroom level through the funding of grants, awards, honors, and other projects by channeling the generosity of contributors into classroom-based efforts that benefit all students.
School Improvement Grants for Parent Involvement
Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant program finances school-improvement projects initiated by parents. Maximum Award: $5,000. Youth Garden Grant
National Gardening Association awards Youth Garden Grants to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. Eligibility: Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the United State. Applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years. Awards: For the 2009 grant cycle, 125 grants are available. Five-Day Math and Science Camp for Teachers
The Mickelson ExxonMobil 2009 Teachers Academy offers a five-day program, with camps in New Jersey, Texas and Louisiana, designed to provide third- through fifth-grade teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in science and math. Maximum Award: All expenses paid five-day program in July 2009. Eligibility: Third- through fifth-grade teachers from all over the United States. Deadline: October 31st, 2008. CVS Pharmacy Community Grants are currently accepting proposals for programs targeting children under age 18 with disabilities that address: health and rehabilitation services; a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs; opportunities or facilities that give greater access to physical movement; and play. The Helen & Edward Brancati Teacher Development Scholarship
The Helen & Edward Brancati Teacher Development Scholarship was created in memory of Helen and Edward who felt that education was the door to the future and that a good teacher was the key. Award Amount: $750 to $1,000 annually. Eligibility: Applicants must be employed by an accredited school in the United States, a US Citizen, and be seeking post graduate education, or needing funds for required continuing education classes, workshops or conferences as well as certification courses. Toyota/NCFL: Family Literacy Teacher Award
The Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Award is given to educators, selected by the National Center for Family Literacy, who demonstrate exemplary efforts to help parents and children achieve their academic and non-academic goals. Carnegie/New York Times: Exceptional Librarians
The Carnegie/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award encourages library users to recognize exceptional public, academic, and school librarians. Users may nominate a librarian online based on the quality of service that the nominee has provided, the librarian’s demonstrated knowledge of the library and its resources, and the nominee’s commitment to helping library users. Maximum Award: $5,000, a plaque, and a $500 travel stipend to attend an awards reception in New York hosted by the New York Times on December 9th, 2008. A plaque will also be given to each award winner’s library. Eligibility: Public, school, and academic librarians. Taking Center Stage-Act II:Building Effective Programs for English Learners in Middle Grades
Learn about a unique website designed to help educators close the achievement gap in the middle grades so that students are prepared to succeed in high school through this SchoolsMovingUp online event. Carol Abbott, author of Taking Center Stage—Act II, and Jeanette Ganahl, Administrator, English Learner Accountability Unit, California Department of Education will guide participants to key English learner resources and best practices on the Taking Center Stage—Act II middle grades website. The presenters will answer questions about best practices for engaging middle grades English learners, as well as share several examples and strategies that school leaders can use to guide their staff members in using this free, online resource that was developed by the California Department of Education for middle grades educators and administrators.
