We want to hear your opinions about COPE!

You are cordially invited to attend a focus group session about COPE. This is an opportunity to give us feedback on how the program is working for you and to discuss with your fellow students their experiences as a paraprofessional completing a degree. We also plan to celebrate with our graduates and welcome new program participants.

When: Dec. 18th 5:00-7:30 PM A light meal will be provided.

Where: Florida Gulf Coast University, Academic Building 5 (AB5) Room 210

Why: We use your input to help guide future changes in the program.

Your time and perspectives are valuable to us, each attendee will receive a stipend of $50.00. (Stipend provided to COPE Members only)

Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Award

The National Center for Family Literacy and Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Award is given to educators who demonstrate exemplary efforts to help parents and children achieve their academic and non-academic goals. Eligibility: nominated teacher must have worked in a comprehensive family literacy program for three years that includes children’s education, adult education, parenting education (Parent Time), and interactive literacy activities between parents and children (Parent and Child Together Time). Maximum Award: $5,000. Deadline: December 5, 2007.

Stand Up for Me—Train the Trainer

The Transition Center at the University of Florida is sponsoring a one-day training event to promote self-determination skills and provide information about the self-directed individual education plan (IEP) process. This training is most appropriate for personnel with the capacity to conduct district level training, however interested teachers and family members are also encouraged to come.

New Online Class Offered Through University of Florida by Transition Center

Who: Individuals who work with students with disabilities as a special education or content area teacher in a middle or high school.
What: EEX 6750 “Families and Transition for Students with Disabilities” with paid tuition from the Transition Center at the University of Florida

Where: This is an online course offered through the University of Florida and worth 3 graduate credits.

When: This class will be available in the Spring of 2008 (from January 7th to March 17th) and the enrollement deadline is December 14th

FREE Regional Training

Structured Teaching Approach to Working with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Center for Autism and Related Diseases (CARD) is hosting a regional training. This workshop will be provided by the Director of Division TEACCH, Dr. Gary Mesibov, one of the premier autism experts in the world. Dr. Mesibov will present the principles and practices of structure teaching in a 2-day workshop targeted toward pre-kindergarten and elementary school teachers, school-based therapists, and administrators.

Ideas in Action: Baldwin Academy

Baldwin Academy is a an elementary school in La Puente, California with a high poverty, high minority student population that performs well above its peers and has maintained a “similar schools ranking” of 10 (on a 10-point scale) on the California Academic Performance Index (API) for over four years. How have they accomplished this? In this interactive presentation, California school and district leaders interested in honing their instructional programs will learn from principal Bonnie Wilson about successful strategies at Baldwin. Topics will include Baldwin’s staff focus on participating in shared decision-making and collaboration, providing professional learning opportunities, conducting ongoing analysis of data, and creating a culture of high expectations and extensive family involvement. This webinar is presented by the American Institutes for Research and WestEd as partners in the California Comprehensive Center to highlight high performing schools making a difference in student achievement.
