NAMI offers Family-to-Family Classes

The National Alliance on Mental Illness will be offering Family-to-Family classes beginning January 15th. The class will meet for 12 weeks and is designed to help the well family member of someone with mental illness (schizophrenia, bipolar or manic depression, severe depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, etc.). The class is taught by trained volunteers who will help family members understand and support their ill relative while maintaining their own well being. There no cost for this opportunity, only a commitment to attend and learn and share.

Bright Futures in Practice: Mental Health

The Florida Department of Health, Child and Adolescent Health Unit, in collaboration with Georgetown University, is planning five one-day regional trainings on the Bright Futures in Practice: Mental Health Guide and Toolkit and What to Expect and When to Seek Help developmental tools. These workshops are free of charge. Five contact hours for CMEs and CEUs will be available. The workshops and materials are FREE to participants. Each workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

ING Unsung Heroes Awards Program

The ING Unsung Heroes awards program recognizes innovative and progressive thinking in education through monetary awards. Maximum Award: $25,000 to Grand Prize Winner. Eligibility: full-time educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals or classified staff members with effective projects that improve student learning at an accredited K-12 public or private school. Deadline: April 30, 2008.

Important Deadlines to Receive Money from The Smaller Learning Communities

The Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) program awards discretionary grants to local educational agencies to support the implementation of SLCs and activities to improve student academic achievement in large public high schools with enrollments of 1,000 or more students. SLCs include structures such as freshman academies, multi-grade academies organized around career interests or other themes, “houses” in which small groups of students remain together throughout high school, and autonomous schools-within-a-school, as well as personalization strategies, such as student advisories, family advocate systems, and mentoring programs.

The Ooey Gooey Lady is Coming!

You are invited to a presentation by Lisa Murphy, the nationally acclaimed Ooey Gooey Lady.  Lisa presents over 150 workshops each year to audiences across the country on various topics related to early childhood, specifically how to be more play-based in the classroom.  Lisa will be presenting a key note address as well as conducting three workshops about hands-on, play-based activities, including ooey gooey art and science activities.  There is a $25 fee for this event that includes lunch.

SchoolsMovingUp Presents “Building Oral Language into the Basal”

Co-sponsored by CREATE (Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners) this presentation features Diane August, Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Applied Linguistics, who will describe methods to develop the language proficiency skills of English Learners in the context of language arts, math, and science instruction in elementary and middle schools. Examples of methods include read-alouds of expository and narrative text and hands-on experiences to build academic language. This work is part of ongoing research funded by the US Department of Education to improve the language and literacy skills of English Learners.
